First

Journal entry 9/20/06 5 p.m.
I just unpacked my room. Conditions at Loskop Dam Nature Reserve could certainly be more minimalistic. There is a hut with showers and flush toliets. We have a practically full kitchen (where much vegan food will be prepared) and a living area. My hut-L calls it that but I think it looks more like a cabin-has a desk and chair, a bed (twin with a wood frame and a single foam pad) and 3 shelves. The previous tenant, Jen, left a note expressing wishes for a great experience. I will be at this reserve as long as I can be- and right now I can't stop smiling. I haven't felt joy like this before, because i have never done this before. As I sit on my porch steps and watch the sun begin to set franklins quail run beneath my feet and I listen to the calls of what I assume are the baboons( I've never been here before, you would think thats what it is too). The happiness and warmth suddenly consume me like the touch of my last lover or the embrace of that one friend who didn't want to let me go. One mans words run through my head and heart. My whole life has been leading up to this- and from here I just build. Thanks jen, but no wishing necessary.

So- sorry about the cheeeze and the lack of pictures. Will have less of the first and more of the latter in my next post.

Hey baboon gal...first, I'm extremely sorry I didn't give you a Thunder-patented, going-away-to-Africa bear hug on Sunday...I felt horrible for not being able to see you (to be honest, it was just a completely shitty day for me), so I hope you can forgive me. Anyway, I went to the B-Man's B-Day and once again showed how bad I am at B-owling (or one-handed baseball throwing as I believe you once called it). But alas, I shall work everyday to better my abilities in this sport. So in other words, I'm kicking your ass when you get back. School is rather enjoyable--so far. The research ants have become my children (seeing that it took almost two hours just to supply each colony with food and water...so I'm essentially a mother now). As for Halloween, I'm already racking my brain for Thunder-patented pirate ideas. Whatever is produced will undoubtedly be glorious. I certainly hope that you are having the time of your life. You're an inspiration to all of us, and I'm already counting the days until your return. Just know that whenever you hear the distant roll of thunder on the savanna, I am with you. Au revoir.

I'm so glad that you love it there, although I never doubted that you wouldn't. You better keep a perspective and still be in awe when a babboon is 5 feet from you 5 months down the road. I miss you, and can't wait to go shark caging when I come. I'll have your package on its way by the end of the week. I'll talk to you soon.
